Description for Marc Chagall, Original Lithograph, "The Tribe of Zebulon"

Original Lithograph, 1962
Size: 13" x 9.6", unframed
This lithograph is part of the 'Jerusalem Windows' suite.
The Jerusalem Windows symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel. The images were created not just as stained glass windows but as lithographic representations as well. This was an equally challenging achievement as for each image around 20 stone blocks were used, one stone for each colour. Charles Sorlier, the artist assistant was the one who engraved the images on the lithographic stones, under the instructions and supervision of Marc Chagall himself.

Chagall’s words at the opening ceremony of the Jerusalem Windows at the Hadassa Medical Centre: “These paintings how I conceived them do not represent a dream of one person but all mankind. The love I feel to all mankind will be uttered, and there will be no enemies. In my paintings I have hidden my love.“
"This is my modest gift to the Jewish people who have always dreamt of biblical love, friendship and of peace among all peoples. This is my gift to that people which lived here thousands of years ago among the other Semitic people."
