Description for Japanese Irises Scarf
Details
In a pair of six-fold screens titled Irises at Yatsuhashi (Eight Bridges) in the Museum's collection, Korin has set their stately, vertical forms against an angular bridge that sweeps diagonally across both screens. The screens reference an episode in The Ise Stories (Ise monogatari) in which the protagonist stops by a stream that branches into eight bridged channels, and the sight of irises prompts him to compose a nostalgic love poem. Our lustrous scarf features details from one of these screens.
- Silk crêpe de chine
